Proverbs 10:24
Proverbs 10:24
What the wicked dreads will come to him, but what the righteous desire will be given to them.
Since I'm in the US, I should focus on us in the US for a moment...
The truth is, many things we dread are coming upon us.
We have dreaded poverty, and now our money is becoming more and more worthless.
We have dreaded having our land taken from us, and the truth is we don't even own the land we think we own now. If you think you do own it, then see what happens if you don't pay taxes on the land you think you own.
We have dreaded losing our freedoms, and we are becoming less free.
We have dreaded losing, but we cannot fight to win.
There are things that we have desired that in all honesty we should not have desired, and the things we dread are in many ways the results of us pursuing those evil desires.
In the time of eugenics, we desired to get rid of those we considered defective or faulty or otherwise undesirable; now, there are people who live in fear that those kinds of people are growing more and more numerous and will soon overrun the people they think are better.
In the time of eugenics, we wanted to be a strong and healthy people. Now almost every other ad on television is for this medicine or that one, and they all give lists of side-effects that seem more bothersome than the issue they say they address. And dare I point out the state of our overall physical fitness?
The point is, we are proving the truth of Proverbs 10:24: what we dread is coming upon us, because we are wicked. We have done evil, we have been unjust, we have coveted and stolen and murdered, we have lied, we have broken our promises and oaths and vows, we have served mammon rather than God, we have loved pleasure more than we have loved God.
Some people try to point to missions work from the US as some reason God has preserved the US. I will give this partial credit, but there are also dark things behind this idea; for example, the fact that far too many missionaries from this country have exported our hellish health-and-wealth prosperity gospel, not the gospel of Christ having died for our sins.
We need to get rid of our pride. We've done God no favors by existing. He owes us nothing except punishment for our many, many sins. If God has spared us so far, that is His mercy and grace and kindness, not something we've earned. We have no right to boast of ourselves or look down on anyone else.
If we want to be the righteous, if we want God to make us righteous, then repentance is where we must start. And we must repent of our own sins, not the sins of others, not the sins of the other political side, or the sins of those across the border or across the sea.
The games of blaming and finger-pointing need to end. It is because of our own sins, because we are wicked, that what we dread is coming upon us. Own up to that, and repent.
