Dear Humbuck: those who leave

Dear Humbuck, I completely understand the general excitement when we hear that churches are growing fewer and those that remain are growing emptier; I understand, and to some degree I share in that excitement. Yet I would also give a word of caution and even warning, because such news should not make us at all complacent. Remember that I said that nigh unto 1500 years ago we were able to remake the church into our image and after our likeness, and that we then told it to go and take dominion over all the earth. We could do that because we knew that, much like the religious leaders the one we left spoke to, the people we were forcing to be baptized and take the sacraments and listen to scriptures and ceremonies spoken in a language they themselves did not know would not be citizens of heaven but would instead become 10-fold more the denizens of hell. The church became a thing of forms that had no substance, and we would happily let people go through forms to their hearts’ content so lon...

Dear Humbuck: credibility

Dear Humbuck After waxing so eloquent about our work in christendom, I’d like to say a bit about why it matters, even today. Perhaps the smallest advantage we get from our work is to be found in those who want to bring back christendom. Don’t get me wrong, I would be very happy to see the world burn in the fires of a new techno-christendom, one that would make the old christendom look like a mere child’s game. This new christendom would have all the former fire and zeal, but with access to all the tech toys the humans have made in the past centuries. Can you imagine an Inquisition as zealous as the last, but with the many ways of spying and intruding on people that are now available? An inquisition that can watch all the persons all the time, can hear every word they mutter, read every word they type? It would be exquisite! The modern totalitarian wannabes have only the faintest clue what such a thing would unleash upon the world. But putting aside such pleasant dreams, there is a very...

Dear Humbuck: Christendom

Dear Humbuck, The topic of Christendom is one that delights me, as I consider it an unqualified success on our part. But to understand why I think it such a success, we must look into the ways of the one we left. One thing Christendom shows is just how mad the one we left really is. I would dare say that none of the stone-faced fire-gods we plant in the minds of the apes is half as mad in our eyes as he is. When I look at the history of this world that I have seen or heard about, I have to wonder what he is doing! It is as if he is determined to do everything backwards! He wanted a people? Well, there were already great peoples on the earth at that time, why did he not choose the Sumerians or the Hittites or the Babylonians or the Egyptians or the Indians or the Chinese or some other great people of that time? But he chooses not a nation but a man, a great man with great wealth to be sure but still just one man, and he tells him to leave his homeland and go somewhere else and he will g...
